The California drought is a big deal—and it is affecting everyone in the San Diego area. While there may be nothing you can do to directly end the drought, there are changes you can make around your home, and especially in your yard, to lessen the impact of the drought. As we enter these hot, dry, summer months, consider these important tips that can minimize the impact the drought has on your home.
- Sprinkler systems are far superior to hand watering – Using a timed sprinkler system is much superior to hand watering. You can control how much water is used and easily adjust it as needed. You may be surprised by how little water is required to keep your plants healthy.
- It is never appropriate to water during the day – Watering overnight is the best solution, but early morning or late evening is another option. Watering in the heat of the day makes no sense at all as the water will wash away before it can soak into the ground.
- Don’t break the law – Check into the local regulations for watering (and for filling your pool or other outdoor uses). Make sure you are not breaking any laws. It is never worth doing this—not only for the legal risk but because it is simply not fair.
- Prioritize water for edibles and trees – Your grass will always grow back, or you can help it grow back later. However, your garden and trees are less hardy. Make sure you give them priority.
- Consider a lawn free yard – While switching over to a lawn free yard may involve an upfront investment, it will often wind up costing you less over time. This is an excellent solution for many households.
- Capture what little rainwater does fall – Putting out rain buckets or other capturing devices is a terrific way to take advantage of our world around us. Even though we are in a drought, there is rainfall—why not utilize it?
- Have your foundation checked by professionals – Your foundation could be in danger because of reduced rainfall. Consider having a home inspection to make sure your home is in good condition. It is a good idea to catch problems early and fix them, to avoid serious issues in the future.
- Don’t forget insect control – Insects will often adapt to low-water conditions. You may find that insects are more likely to enter your home in a drought than they would when rainfall is normal. Call your exterminator to have bugs eliminated.
