Tierrasanta Open Concept Whole Home Remodel

Built in 1986, this 1,971-square-foot Tierrasanta home had settled into a layout that no longer matched how its owners wanted to live. A wet bar and load-bearing-adjacent walls closed off the kitchen from the entry gallery, “goal post” columns divided the dining and living areas, and outdated skylights and a drop ceiling left the kitchen feeling boxed in rather than bright. The goal of this whole-home remodel was to open the floor plan, modernize every major living space, and bring daylight and flow back into the heart of the house.

The kitchen became the anchor of the project. Removing the non-load-bearing wall between the gallery and kitchen, along with the wet bar cabinetry, opened sightlines from the front door straight through to the living spaces. Raising the kitchen ceiling to create a vaulted, drywall-finished profile — paired with a new lighting plan and greenhouse windows in place of the old skylights — gave the space height and natural light it hadn’t had before. A new island with decorative support legs, Kemper semi-custom cabinetry in a cherry raised-panel style, and Corian countertops replaced dated finishes throughout, while a former coat closet was converted into a walk-in pantry with new shelving to solve a longstanding storage gap.

In the dining and living room, removing the “goal post” columns opened the two spaces into one continuous room, and a new French slider replaced the old patio door to bring in more light and easier access to the yard. The fireplace got a matching refresh, with a new tile surround, hearth, and stain-grade mantle replacing the dated tile face.

The primary suite saw the most extensive structural change: existing walls were reconfigured to create a proper walk-in shower with full-height tile, his-and-her vanities with Corian counters, a new walk-in closet, and double French doors at both the bedroom entry and the bathroom entry, replacing tight single-door access. The hall bathroom and laundry room were fully rebuilt as well, with the tub converted to a walk-in shower and new cabinetry and tile flooring added to the laundry space. Bedroom 2 was reworked into a home office with new data wiring, and all bypass and closet doors throughout the home were replaced to match.

The result is a home that finally functions as one connected, light-filled space — from the moment you walk through the new front door to the reconfigured primary suite at the back of the house — giving the owners a floor plan, storage, and finishes built around how they actually use their home.
