The Project Story
Designed for Daily Life
This National City kitchen remodel took place at Olivewood Gardens, a 7.85-acre educational garden and community resource centered on health education, environmental stewardship, and community connection. Cooking and food education are an important part of Olivewood’s programming, making a dependable, well-planned kitchen an especially valuable part of the property.
The approximately 425-square-foot remodel was approached as a comprehensive renewal rather than a cosmetic update. The scope began with demolition of the existing kitchen and called for new cabinetry, electrical work, plumbing, drywall, insulation, doors, flooring, and interior paint throughout the remodeled areas. Appliances and plumbing fixtures were provided separately, allowing those elements to be coordinated with the rebuilt space.
Because so many systems were addressed at once, careful sequencing was an important part of the project. Electrical and plumbing work needed to be coordinated with the new cabinetry and appliance locations, while new insulation and drywall created a clean foundation for the finished kitchen. New flooring, doors, and paint then helped bring the remodeled area together as one cohesive environment.
The project information provided does not identify any specific structural repairs or unexpected construction discoveries, so the emphasis of the remodel was on thoroughly updating the existing kitchen footprint and the systems within it. Rather than simply replacing visible finishes, the work addressed what was happening behind the walls as well—creating an updated infrastructure to support the new cabinetry, fixtures, appliances, and everyday use of the space.
That comprehensive approach is particularly meaningful at Olivewood Gardens, where hands-on cooking experiences are part of the organization’s educational programming. Olivewood uses its National City property to help community members build skills and confidence around nutrition and food, including cooking programs for both children and families.
The finished remodel gives the property an updated kitchen built around renewed materials and coordinated building systems. New cabinetry, flooring, lighting and electrical infrastructure, plumbing, insulation, doors, and finishes work together to create a more functional setting for the activities taking place within the space—adding long-term value to a property designed to serve and educate the National City community.
