The kitchen was planned as more than a cooking space, with generous cabinetry and a built-in work area extending its everyday usefulness. The desk, wine storage and surrounding cabinets give frequently used items a defined place, while the open connection toward the entry supports the broader interior rework and improves movement through the home

Opening up the remodeled areas created a kitchen that feels more connected to the surrounding rooms instead of separated from them. Peninsula seating adds a casual place to gather, while the adjacent built-in desk and shelving provide useful storage and workspace without interrupting circulation through the kitchen and entry.

The new layout organizes the main cooking and cleanup zones around an island cooktop and a wide window over the sink, giving the homeowners a more practical workspace with clear counter areas on both sides. Extensive new cabinetry and the more open connection to the adjoining living spaces support the project’s goals of better storage, smoother circulation and a kitchen that works naturally with the rest of the home.

The Project Story

Designed for Daily Life

This La Mesa remodel was designed to make the kitchen work more naturally with the rest of the home. Rather than treating the kitchen as a stand-alone update, the project also reworked portions of the dining room, family room, hallway, and entry so the homeowners could gain better flow, more useful storage, and a layout that felt more connected. The plans called for removing the non-bearing wall between the kitchen and dining room, creating a new pantry within the hallway, and reframing several openings around the family room and entry.

The kitchen itself was rebuilt from the studs with a new layout shaped around everyday use. An eight-foot-wide window was planned above the sink to bring more openness to the work area, while new lighting included recessed fixtures and under-cabinet lighting for a mix of general and task illumination.

Storage was another important part of the design. New alder cabinetry provided a substantial amount of organized space, including multiple drawer banks, pull-out trash storage, a spice pull-out, tray storage, wine cubbies, and soft-close drawers and doors. The new pantry added even more dedicated storage outside the main cabinetry, helping keep the kitchen easier to use and less cluttered.

The finish plan brought the remodeled spaces together with new tile flooring in the kitchen, pantry, entry, and entry bathroom, along with a full-height kitchen backsplash and new countertops. The work also required careful transitions between new and existing areas, including drywall, exterior stucco, door and window openings, and existing finishes.

The finished remodel gives the homeowners a kitchen with more storage, better lighting, and a stronger connection to the rooms around it. Just as importantly, the changes to the pantry, entry, dining area, and family room make the home function more comfortably as a whole rather than improving only one room.
